Mississinawa Valley BOE January meeting highlights

UNION CITY--The Mississinawa Valley Local Board of Education met for the Organization Meeting and Regular Meeting on Jan. 14.

Daren Hiatt was elected MV Board of Education President for 2013 and Rick Scholl was elected Vice-President.

Board members were appointed to the following standing committees for the 2013 Calendar Year: Dale Breymier and Rick Scholl, Building and Grounds/Facilities; Breymier and Daren Hiatt, Finance and Negotiations; Hiatt and Rick Scholl, Personnel; Lori Cox and Scholl, MVCTC/MDECA; Cox and Scholl, Legislative; Tony Maloy and Scholl, Scholarship; Maloy and Daren Hiatt, Technology; Cox and Maloy, Curriculum; Breymier and Hiatt, Audit; Maloy, Student Achievement Liaison.

During the public participation portion of the meeting, Keith Threewits discussed the authorization of a School Board to allow armed weapons (guns) in a School District. He feels people have the right with government consent to arm and protect themselves. He feels staff should be allowed to carry firearms in a district to protect themselves in case of a shooting.

Bruce Mikesell also spoke during the Public Participation. He informed all present that the Darke County Gaming Commission has authorized 24 trainings with staff free of charge.

The Board approved:

* resolution determining to proceed to levy a renewal of the Permanent Improvement Levy;

* a 3-year Treasurer’s contract for Nicholas Hamilton jointly agreed upon by Ansonia LSD, Mississinawa Valley LSD and Newton LSD effective Aug. 1, 2013;

* the 2013-2014 School Calendar; first day for students for the 2013-2014 school year will be Aug. 27 and the last day for students will be May 29, 2014;

* the estimated 2013-14 Alternate Tax Document to be submitted the same to the Darke County Auditor by Jan. 15, 2013;

* continuing membership in the Ohio School Boards Association (OSBA) for the 2013 Calendar Year;

* participating in the OSBA Legal Assistance Fund for the 2013 Calendar Year;

* the High School Marching Band traveling to Gatlinburg, Tennessee to participate in the Music in the Parks program April 24-27, 2014;

* non-renewing Kathleen Leeper as the Cafeteria Manager effective at the end of the 2012-2013 school year;

* the following individuals co-curricular contracts: Travis Gilbert, Junior Varsity Baseball Coach for the 2012-2013 school year; Mindy Longfellow, Junior Varsity Volleyball Coach;

* the resolution regarding the Declaration of Material Assistance/Nonassistance to a Terrorist Organization (DMA) Policy Revisions through Neola Inc. effective September 2010;

* a contract for the remainder of the school year for Janis Eby as a bus driver;

* a three-year contract for Stephanie Klingshirn as the MV Elementary Principal; and

* a three-year MV Junior High and High School Principal contract for Jeffrey Winchester.

The board accepted, with regret, the retirement of Christine Beasley, fifth grade teacher which will begin June 1, 2013, and resignation of the Head Varsity Football Coach, Brandon Mock, effective immediately.

There are 14 Certified Employment Contracts and 8 Classified Employment Contracts which will be expiring at the conclusion of the 2011-2012 School Year. They will be recommended for board action during the next few months.

The MV Eighth grade students will be taking a field trip to MV CTC on January 23, 2013.

In recognition of January as Board Appreciation Month, Dr. Wendel presented certificates to the Board Members for their continued service on the Board of Education.

The Board went into executive session at 7:45 p.m. to discuss personnel and security. They returned to regular session at 8:14 pm. and adjourned at 8:15 p.m.
